With the popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, UFC and King of the Cage type of competition, people are becoming more aware of ground fighting techniques.
Ground fighting has proved to be very effective in mixed martial art competition. A mixture of Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, judo and submission grappling together with all the various stand up fighting styles has made people more generally aware.
It is without doubt a very effective art with a wide array of techniques at your disposal. Many fighters make it look so easy but there are many technical aspects to master.
The same basic techniques exist in Ground Fighting in Self Defense, however, as there are no rules, the techniques are often simplified and many additional dirty methods are added.
In real attack situations, it is not advisable to actually take your attacker down to the ground on top of you by choice, however, you must know how to react if that's where you end up after a struggle.
There are many reasons why you would not take the attacker to ground by choice, even if you were very confident in your skills. You would certainly not want to go to the floor if there were multiple attackers. There would be a high probability of an apparently lone attacker having an accomplice waiting around the corner.
It is useful to know how to react or fight on the floor as you could very well end up down there in a struggle and you still have to fight your way from that position.
Another negative point about going to the floor in the street is the fact your environment could well be concrete, glass, cans, and rocks. These items can make quite a mess of you on their own if you were rolling around on the ground.
My advice would be to learn ground fighting in self defense and keep it very simple. Learn how to escape from all the typical positions quickly and effectively. You only need to learn the main positions but practice often so you become competent.
Gound Fighting in Self Defense is one area that our new E-Book covers in detail.
Learn how to escape from all holds, quickly and effectively. Remember your goal is to get up and get away as soon as possible. As with all protection techniques, simplicity is the key. The more complex a technique, the less likely it would be possible to carry out in a high stress situation.
Ground fighting in Self Defense is just one aspect of you need to become skilled at. Practice regularly and you will soon become very comfortable reacting, if a situation is taken down to the floor.
