Army Medals
Army medals are recognitions for heroic performances in military service. It is the duty of the country to reward a person for his or her committed service. They are issued according to the suggestions from the Defense department. In the US, the first army medal was the "badge of military merit," established by General George Washington on August 7, 1782, during the revolutionary war. Later several other medals were introduced to recognize the remarkable services of the army.
An army medal possesses a unique design, which features the symbols of the country. It is suspended by ribbons, which can be pinned to the uniform or wore around the neck. Sometimes a shield is attached in between the medal and the neck ribbon. The medals are made from metals such as gold, silver, bronze, or brass. Most often the medals are made in silver and electroplated with gold. In the US, the ribbons which hang the medals have a particular pattern such as the blue or white stripes, the stars etc.
Army medals are awarded in ceremonies. The most important army military awards are presented by the President. The medal is given to the kin, in case of a posthumous award. The medal has to be worn on the uniform during official gatherings. The recipient of more than one medal has to wear the medals according to the order of precedence of the medals.

They are awarded in different categories such as meritorious service in battle, the service during national emergency, service during foreign occupation or missions, etc. There are around 20 important army medals in different categories. In the US, the Medal of Honor is the highest medal in the meritorious army service.
